On Saturday, April 27, 2019, the Department of English, with the Film and Media Studies Program, held its annual graduation reception, a chance for those completing undergraduate and graduate programs to gather with faculty, staff, peers, friends, and family on a smaller scale. Three PhDs, five MAs, and seventeen MFAs were granted. All told, 194 BAs passed through English's doors this year, plus 27 certificates in Public and Professional Writing. There were 10 Film Studies, and 22 Film and Media Studies, graduates; 105 Writing majors; 6 Public and Professional Writing graduates (This was the first graduating class for the new major); and 51 Literature majors.
The ceremony followed a new format, with department program directors introducing one undergraduate speaker from each of their programs. These speakers shared their experiences in their majors, and expressed gratitude to the faculty and peers who enriched those experiences. Speaking for Literature was Gabrielle Keane; for Writing, Christiana Dillard; for Composition, Jared Gustafson; and for Film, Valkyrie Speaker.
